The bottom line here, is that even though women are a minority in the drumming world, we have to see them as DRUMMERS, period !
I've seen Hilary play "Live", and she is as good or even better than a lot of "male" players. And the one who mentionned that if she was a man, he would not listen to "him", should think twice ! The video clip shown above shows talent.
Most of the Known women in the drum business are just as good as MANY male drummers I know. So, my suggestion is to treat these women who are a minority in our world, as MUSICIANS and DRUMMERS. Period.
"Not bad for a girl drummer" can be just as bad as "not bad for a white drummer"...I'm sure some of us here can relate to that...

I think perhaps you can trace a bit of it to some of those ways that women were suppressed for all those years - gender bigotry & prejudice [where it could be found], voting aka suffrage, less overall wages for many yrs, stay-at-home homekeeper / barefoot & pregnant stereotypes; "in a 'man's' world;" objectification, which still goes on in a BIG way, etc] But this has & will continue to change, however slowly but surely, whuch is a good thing...

I'm with benrand on this one. I've seen Hilary on the MD2000 video, live in clinic, and heard some stuff she's played on.
She seemed very cool and down to earth at the clinic, but seemed more like a pain in the ass on that MD2000 video. I thought the "girl" question was perfectly legitimate, but she gave a Dennis Chambers type of answer. ;-)
For me, her playing is boring, and the groove is OK, but not terrible solid. In the clinic setting, she tried to do execute some more technically challenging "drummer-oriented" chops, but seemed to struggle to get through things that could only be classified as "intermediate difficulty" at best.
Before I get to my rant, let me point out the postives in the interest of equal time:
- You can't be too bad and still keep a gig with Robben Ford. She's played with Robben and I haven't.
- She's makes her living playing drums, and I don't.
- She really seems to be "into" music and drumming. I admire that kind of enthusiasm and dedication, even if the result leaves something to be desired.
Now for the rant:
I don't really care about all the "she's good, for a girl," or all that kind of stuff, but I think the bottom line is that Hilary is a "name" drummer only because she's female. I highly doubt any male drummer who played at her level would land any notable gigs or endorsements.
Consider this: Suppose I posted a few tracks with her playing, but instead told you this was an undiscovered, male drummer in his mid-20's. I am quite confident that I would get a bunch of replies from the regulars on this board, and almost all of them would basically say, "Yeah, the drumming's OK, but it's nothing special and it lacks this and lacks that and...yadda yadda yadda."
So, my point is that many people seem to go out of their way to cut her some extra slack, and I think the reason is because she's a girl in a guy-dominated sector. Maybe it's just a natural human reaction to "root for the underdog," so to speak.
If she's really a good player, then I don't have a problem with all the raves; however, it just doesn't sit well with me when people are cutting players of her quality a break, and at the same time are ripping Chambers, Gadd, Weckl, Mangini, and many other top drummers to shreds.
Like some other "name" drummers, I just don't get what the big deal is with Hilary.
Like I said, I took a lot of lessons from a woman who wouldn't have EVER looked as good as Hilary with good lighting a professional makeup.
I mean, with female drummers, the look is what counts for the most part.

Personally, i don't know why there are not as many girls in drumming as guys. It might have something to do with fashion, though. I reckon i could impress a lot of other boys with drumming, but i'm not too sure whether it's that much of an impress-based thing with the female gender. There are lots of very good female percussionists, though, so i don't think there can be a really strong rule.
The only impression i got with Hilary after she finished was that she was really pissed off. She sort of looked like the wanted to say "yeah, you should be clapping! bastards!" or something. I suppose this must be the result of all the rockafeller drummers' (ie. pearl message board) abuse and wolf-whistles etc. It seems quite bad to me...
